Column: Energy and Geopolitics

Nowadays, nations are split between two opposing yet complementary blocks, and the globe is dominated by the oil, coal, and the automobile industry. Energy exporting countries such as Russia, Saudi-Arabia, Iran, and energy importing countries such as the United States of America and European countries are locked in quarrel. The Balance of Power is inoperable; namely, the economic crisis has emerged to disturb any balance. For example, a new risk centre appeared in Iraq, the European nations are in thrall to Iran’s and Russia’s natural recourses, and, in addition, the global economic slowdown overshadows all.At present, the western world appears to be in grave, possibly critical, trouble. This fact will unlikely be disputed by anyone. However, the situation will deteriorate dramatically in the near future unless stern measures are carried out. An appropriate and firm measure is, for instance, the NABUCCONABUCCO project. The NABUCCO project’s main goal is to create independency from Russia’s energy supply toward the Western world.  This goal is highly necessary in order to be self-sufficient and independent. Therefore, the time has arrived to finish the endless discussing, and realize our goals by undertaking action. The NABUCCO project implies a planned gas pipeline that will transport natural gas from Azerbaijan and Iran (and possibly, in the future, from Central-Asia) to Europe. This will diversify Europe’s energy sources and decrease Russian power. The immense problem that this project faces is that Iran, Azerbaijan, and Central-Asian countries are in Russia’s sphere of influence. The Russian state-owned gas company Gazprom, namely, has already announced that they are prepared to purchase Azerbaijan’s gas for a favourable price. As a result, Russia will, of course, try to resell the gas to Europe. NABUCCO is a political, and not an economic project. Therefore, in order to realize this visionary project Europe must involve in the geopolitics of Eurasia and increase political support in the Caucasus and Central-Asia.
